Lab Exam

Lab exams will occur during the 8th week of the semester.
Exams are done individually — no groups.
Each student will have one-half of the lab period (85 minutes) to do the exam. One member of a lab group pairing will take the exam during the first half of the lab period and the other member will take it during the second half. (Students should decide who is going first and who is going second.) For the few groups that have three members, two members should come during the first half and one during the second half.
Be sure to bring your lab kits!
The exam will have three main sections. Each section will consist of: a) building a circuit, b) performing some measurements on the circuit, and c) answering a couple of questions about the circuit and your measurements. Each sub-section (a, b, or c) is worth 10 points, so that each section is worth 30 points. The entire exam is worth 100 points (3 sections x 30 points + 10 points just for showing up = 100 points.)
You should complete all of the work for one section, and then have the TA check your work. The TA will look over your circuit, check the measured values, and then chat with you for a minute about your work.
Scoring details.
1. If you have built the circuit correctly, measured all of the quantities correctly, and can answer the questions correctly, you will get full credit for that section.
2. If the circuit is built incorrectly, the TA will tell you that the circuit is wrong and ask you to try again. This comes with a 5-point penalty. If the circuit is still wrong on the second try, the TA will tell you that, and then they will fix it for you. The comes with a second 5-point penalty, meaning that you essentially get no points for building the circuit.
3. Once the circuit is correct, the TA will look at the measured values. If any of the measurements are incorrect, they will tell you which values are wrong and ask you to try again. This comes with a 5-point penalty. If the measurements are still wrong on the second try, the TA will tell you that and impose a second 5-point penalty, meaning that you essentially get no points for measuring the circuit.
4. Your answers to the questions are worth 10 points and are assigned at the discretion of the TA.
When you have completed the 3 circuits and associated measurements, and answered all the questions, you are free to go. Any work that is not completed by the end of the period will have to be left undone.
